John Lawrence was born in the Colchester area on 22 January 1753 and died on 17 January 1839. During his early education he wrote an essay about exhibiting kindness to animals. His first publications were on political and local topics, but from the end of the century until his death he wrote mostly on animals and field sports. He married Ann Barton in the early 1780s, and they had one son and five daughters. He spent most of his life raising horses and other animals.
