Simon Somerville Laurie was born in Edinburgh on 13 November 1829 and died there on 2 March 1909. He attended the Edinburgh High School between 1839 and 1844, and the University of Edinburgh between 1844 and 1849, when he was awarded his Master's degree. Having been a private tutor since 1849, he was appointed to the Education Committee of the Church of Scotland at Edinburgh in 1855, where he acted as Secretary and schools inspector. He retired from the committee in 1905. Laurie gave the Gifford Lectures in Edinburgh in the 1905–1906 session.
