A trade union officer or representative who acts in a voluntary capacity and whose status differs from that of a full-time officer who is a union employee. Most union officers in the UK are lay representatives and are elected to their positions by union members. Lay representatives include shop stewards, convenors, and branch officers at local level and the elected members of union executives, councils, conferences, and committees at regional and national levels.
