Amer. soprano. Sang in musicals, then went for voice tuition at Juilliard Sch. Won Fulbright schol. to Ger. 1955. Brit. début 1957 (Strauss's Vier letzte Lieder with LSO). Opera début Berlin 1958 (Composer in Ariadne auf Naxos). Salzburg Fest. début 1962. Sang title‐role in Lulu, Vienna 1962 and London 1966, and Marie in Wozzeck in Vienna, Berlin, Munich, S. Francisco, NY Met, and Milan (1971). CG début 1965; NY Met début 1967. Notable Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier, singing role at farewell Met appearance 1985, but sang Countess Geschwitz in Lulu in Chicago 1987.
