(c. 1513–75). English architect and military engineer. He was probably the grandson of John Lee, and was the first English architect to be knighted. He was Surveyor of Fortifications at Calais from 1536 to 1542, and from 1558 to 1565 worked on the impressive fortifications at Berwick-on-Tweed. He seems to have designed Sandown Castle, IoW (1540s) and Upnor Castle on the River Medway, Kent (1560s).
