Quick Reference

Derived from the West African ancestor god Lebe, ‘the old man at the gate’ in the Voodoo cult of Haiti is Legba, a god or loa identified with the sun. ‘Open the road for me,’ pray his devotees, ‘do not let any evil spirits bar my path.’ Whereas Legba commands the divinities of the day, Carrefour has dominion over the spirits of the night. The latter is conceived of as an energetic moon man, capable of good and evil actions.
