Quick Reference

An oxygen-binding protein found in the root nodules of leguminous plants. Leghemoglobin is structurally and functionally related to the myoglobins and hemoglobins of vertebrates. The heme portion of leghemoglobin is synthesized by the Rhizobium bacteroids, while the protein is encoded by the plant genome. Within the root nodule, bacteroids are bathed in a solution of leghemoglobin that serves to supply them with oxygen.
