A genus of Gram-negative bacteria, most species of which are pathogenic in humans, especially L. pneumophila. Named after an outbreak of pneumonia (legionnaires' disease) among those attending an American Legion reunion. Transmission is usually by aerosols derived from cooling systems, domestic hot water systems, etc.
