John Leland was born on 18 October 1691 at Wigan, Lancashire and died in Dublin, where his family moved while he was still young, on 16 January 1766. A non-conforming divine, he was co-pastor of a congregation in New Row, Dublin, later moving with them to new premises in Eustace Row, Dublin, where he remained until his death. Though educated entirely among the dissenters in Ireland, he was awarded the MA degree of Glasgow University in 1734 and the DD of King's College, Aberdeen in 1739.
