Hung. str. qt. formed in 1918 by 4 members of Budapest Opera Orch.—Jenö Léner (b Szabadka, 1894; d NY, 1948), Joseph Smilovits, Sandor Roth, and Irme Hartman. Début Budapest 1919, Vienna and Paris 1920, NY 1929. Became one of leading qts. of inter‐war period, making first recording of all the Beethoven qts. Disbanded 1942. Reorganized, with partly new membership, 1945, but finally disbanded on Léner's death, 1948.
