US astronaut. He was aboard the first operational flight of the space shuttle Columbia in November 1982. Lenoir was involved in satellite experiments as an assistant professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1965, before his selection as a scientist-astronaut in 1967. He resigned from NASA in 1984, returning 1989–92 as associate administrator for space flight.
