Quick Reference

Eurypontid king of Sparta (reigned 491–469 bc), succeeded his cousin and former marriage‐rival, the deposed Dēmarātus. In 479, as commander‐in‐chief of the ‘Hellenic League’ fleet, he fomented the revolt of Chios and Samos, and decisively defeated the Persians on Cape Mycalē. He had some success against the medizing aristocracies of Thessaly, but, on being recalled to face a charge of bribary, he fled to Tegea.
