A group of bacterial zoonoses caused by leptospira. These include Weil's disease (rat-bite fever), traditionally an occupational disease of sewer workers that is transmitted by rats, an ongoing occupational disease of cane field workers, and a cause of chronic renal failure in endemic areas, where frogs and toads maintain the organism in the environment. Another disease in this family is canicola fever, usually a milder condition, transmitted by dogs.
