(1855–92) English actor who made his name in burlesque roles at the Gaiety Theatre. He first appeared in London in 1878 in a burlesque version of Poole's Paul Pry. From 1885 he was principally associated with Nellie Farren at the Gaiety, with whom he played in Little Jack Sheppard, Monte Cristo Junior (1886), and Ruy Blas (1889). His last burlesque, which he co-wrote, was Cinder Ellen up-to-Date (1892). He toured America and Australia with the Gaiety company and was much admired for his physical inventiveness, his ability to imitate prominent actors, and his singing of popular songs.
