One of the first microRNAs (21 nucleotides) discovered (the other is lin-4). In Caenorhabditis elegans let-7 regulates the timing of development; loss of function leads to early death, over-expression to premature expression of adult traits. Various let-7 homologues are reported to map to regions deleted in human cancers and lung tumours have lower let-7 expression and higher ras protein levels than normal lung tissue.
