1 (Massenet: Manon). Bar. A member of the Royal Guards, cousin of Manon Lescaut whom he is to escort to a convent. However, she falls in love with Des Grieux and leaves with him to live in Paris. When she and her lover are arrested as cheat and prostitute, Lescaut effects their escape, but it is too late: Manon is dying. Created (1884) by Alexandre Taskin.
2 (Puccini: Manon Lescaut). Bar. Sergeant in the King's Guards. Brother (in this opera—see above) who is escorting his sister to a convent where she is to complete her education. She runs away with Des Grieux, but when he loses all his money she leaves him and goes to her rich lover. Lescaut knows his sister is unhappy and tells Des Grieux where he can find her. As she is being deported as a prostitute, Lescaut helps Des Grieux to rescue her. Created (1893) by Achille Moro.
