A major sialoglycoprotein with extensive O-linked glycosylation (75–85 oligosaccharides on the 239-aa extracellular domain) found on the surface of human T cells, some B cells, and myeloid cells. It is a transmembrane protein and may be involved in T-cell activation; clearance of CD43 from the region of the immunological synapse may be necessary to trigger activation.
