Samuel Lewis (1782/3–1865) published A Topographical Dictionary of England in seven editions between 1831 and 1848–9, the last edition being in four volumes and an atlas. The text can be viewed online. See also Diana Winterbotham and Alan Crosby, The Local Studies Library: A Handbook for Local Historians (1999). He also published A Topographical Dictionary of Wales (1833, 1844, 1849) in two volumes and an atlas, A Topographical Dictionary of Scotland (1846) in two volumes and an atlas, and A Topographical Dictionary of Ireland (1846) in two volumes and an atlas. Brief historical details of each town and village were given and the civil and ecclesiastical arrangements noted.
