Welsh and Oxford antiquary, natural historian, and philologist, who in 1684 succeeded Robert Plot as keeper of the Ashmolean Museum. He made a major contribution on Wales to Edmund Gibson's revised edition of Camden's Britannia (1695). He was celebrated for his great learning and wide interests.
