As part of the educational system in Northern Ireland there are five education and library boards which are the local education authorities and library authorities for their areas. They are: Belfast Education and Library Board, South Eastern Education and Library Board, Southern Education and Library Board, North Eastern Education and Library Board, and the Western Education and Library Board. Funds are allocated to the boards by the Department of Education, Northern Ireland, and their responsibilities include: advising on the curriculum, enforcing school attendance, providing milk and meals, free books, and pupil transport, employing teachers in controlled schools and employing non‐teaching staff in controlled and maintained schools.
