Quick Reference

n. a system to be introduced by the General Medical Council in November 2009, from which time the medical register will show whether a doctor is a licensed medical practitioner or holds registration only. It will be the licence to practise rather than registration that will signify to patients that a doctor has the legal authority to hold a post as a doctor, write prescriptions, sign death certificates, and exercise various other legal privileges. Once revalidation is introduced, the licence will be subject to periodic renewal.
