Succeeding his father John as Oxford University Printer in 1635, he produced official and theological works, along with Bacon's Of the Advancement of Learning (1640). He remained royalist during the Civil War, but incurred heavy debts with the king's defeat. His wife, Anne, and son Leonard became printers to the university after his death. Leonard junior was the first printer of the Oxford Gazette (later the London Gazette).
