Is employment in a single organization that is entered directly from school, college, or university and left only at the point of retirement. In the intervening period, the employee develops a career within the employing enterprise, moving up the different steps of the internal labour market and possibly experiencing redeployment to different lines of work and to different workplaces and subsidiary businesses. Lifetime employment is one of the three traditional pillars of Japanese employment, the others being reliance on seniority wages and an enterprise union.
