A general term for works of art in which artificial light (usually electric) plays an important role. Although artists had experimented with artificial light since the 18th century, it was not until the 1960s that Light art could claim to be a recognized movement and there was widespread use of fluorescent and neon lighting, lasers, and holography. Several important exhibitions of Light art were held in both Europe and the United States.
