Ropes or wires stretched fore and aft along the decks of a ship in rough weather, so that the crew can hang on to them to prevent themselves being washed overboard. On yachts, they are the lines permanently rigged fore and aft on either side of the deck. They are supported by stanchions and are connected at either end to the pushpit and pulpit.
