Quick Reference

A manuscript of the four Gospels in the Vulgate text, probably written in honour of the canonization of St Cuthbert (698). The script is Anglo‐Saxon majuscule and there are magnificent illuminations and decorative capitals. An Anglo‐Saxon gloss was added in the late 10th cent. in Northumbrian dialect with a colophon stating that the text was written by Eadfrith, bishop of Lindisfarne 698–721. The manuscript is in the Cottonian collection in the British Museum.
