The broadening of absorption or emission lines in a spectrum by one of four mechanisms: Doppler broadening, due to the motion of the emitting gas; pressure broadening or Stark broadening, due to collisions with other atoms and molecules in the star's atmosphere; or Zeeman splitting, as a result of the presence of a strong magnetic field.
