Quick Reference
The shape of an absorption or emission line in a spectrum across the narrow wavelength range it occupies, usually requiring high spectral resolution to be studied. The shape is different for the different line-broadening mechanisms, so the line profile can be used to infer the physical properties of the region where the line is formed.
