Quick Reference

Additional pieces of material sewn to a sail to prevent chafe, mainly in such places as the reef-bands, buntlines, etc. They are generally only seen in the sails of square-rigged ships where the chances of chafing are much greater, due to the multiplicity of rigging, than in fore-and-aft-rigged sailing vessels.
