(1910–1999), Dutch-born American graphic artist, sculptor, painter, and writer-illustrator of picture book fables. Lionni won numerous awards for the more than thirty picture books he produced between 1959 and 1994. His Inch by Inch (1960), Swimmy (1963), Frederick (1967), and Alexander and the Wind-up Mouse (1969) were all Caldecott Honor winners for illustration, while Swimmy also won the prestigious international award, the Golden Apple, at the Bratislava First Biennial (1967).
