Short-lived anti-inflammatory eicosanoids, generated by lipoxygenases from arachidonic acid, that are produced as the inflammatory response resolves. Two lipoxins, LXA4 and LXB4, are known and, as with the leukotrienes, cysteinyl-lipoxins LXC4, LXD4 and LXE4 are also found. The cysteinyl-lipoxins are antagonists for the leukotriene receptors. LXA4 acts through a formyl-peptide-like receptor and inhibits neutrophil chemotaxis, transmigration, superoxide generation, and NFκB activation. Epi-lipoxins, resolvins, and protectins are analogous.
