An electronic instrument for measuring radioisotopes dissolved in a solvent containing a fluorescent chemical that emits a flash of light (a scintillation) when struck by an ionizing particle or photon of electromagnetic radiation. The flash is captured by a photomultiplier tube, transformed into an electric pulse, amplified, routed through a scaler, and counted.
