A teacher with whole‐school responsibility for ensuring that the literacy skills of pupils are supported and developed in lessons across the curriculum. The literacy coordinator plays a significant role in supporting the implementation of national literacy strategies in a school and monitoring their effectiveness. Coordinators are often responsible for leading sessions of in‐service education for teachers to enable them to become familiar with materials provided by the national strategies; and for supporting the senior leadership or senior management team in monitoring provision for literacy in all subjects. In a primary school, the literacy coordinator is responsible for overseeing and supporting the delivery of the literacy hour.
