Cooperative “redefinition of our literary past” from the vantage point of the mid-20th century, issued in three volumes (1948) under the editorship of Robert E. Spiller, Willard Thorp, Thomas H. Johnson, and Henry Seidel Canby, with Howard Mumford Jones, Dixon Wecter, and Stanley T. Williams as associates. The first two volumes were written by 55 scholars, including those above, and the third volume, a bibliography, is the work of Thomas Johnson, with a Bibliography Supplement (1959) by Richard M. Ludwig, followed by a Supplement II (1972).
