In psychoanalysis, the pseudonym of a 5-year-old boy with an irrational fear of horses (hippophobia) who was analysed by his father in 1906–8 with the advice of Sigmund Freud (1856–1939) and discussed in an article by Freud in a famous case study in 1909 entitled ‘Analysis of a Phobia in a Five-Year-Old Boy’ (Standard Edition, X, pp. 5–149), in which the phobia was traced to a castration complex.
