Quick Reference

A picornavirus that causes myocarditis and diabetes-like symptoms in wild rodents (isolated from bank voles Clethrionomys glareolus, in Sweden) and occasionally in people who have been in contact (the first cases were among elite orienteers). The virus is closely related to human parechoviruses but forms a distinct subgroup of the picornaviridae. It has been suggested that it may play a role in type 1 diabetes, although this is still contentious.
