(1813–93), English classical scholar, historian, biographer, and critic. His essays on the life and plays of Shakespeare appeared in 1856, to accompany the edition of Samuel Weller Singer. His 35 Critical Essays on the Plays of Shakespeare, which follow the Folio order and selection, with the addition of Pericles, were collected in 1858, and are still occasionally consulted by lecturers lost for inspiration.
