Founded in 1952 as the Amateur Historian, its name was changed in 1968. Since 1961 it has been the official journal of the Standing Conference for Local History and its successor, the British Association for Local History. It is published quarterly and contains articles and reviews that are scholarly but accessible to a wider readership. As such, it is the principal journal for local historians.
