A condition resulting from bilateral destruction of the medulla oblongata or base of the pons, resulting in paralysis of all voluntary muscles except those of the eyes, with intact consciousness but loss of speech, and communication only through blinking or eye movements. Also called pseudocoma. Compare persistent vegetative state.
