Quick Reference

A west midlands industry. Simple padlocks and chest locks were made on a large scale, but sophisticated locks of brass as well as iron were being made to individual order by the 16th century. Joseph Bramah (1749–1814) invented a famous thief‐proof lock. The industry remained a handcraft until the second half of the 19th century.
