A three-part muscle of the erector spinae group, which extends from the lumbar region to the skull. The longissimus consists of the longissimus cervicis, longissimus thoracis, and the longissimus capitis. The thoracis and cervicis act together to extend the vertebral column and, acting on one side only, bend it laterally. The capitis extends the head and turns the face to one side.
