Peter Lorimer was born in Edinburgh on 27 June 1812 and died, after a short illness, on a preaching visit to Whitehaven on 29 July 1879. The son of a master builder, he grew up in Edinburgh and entered the university in 1827. He did not graduate in arts but proceeded to the theological course. He was ordained on a call from River Terrace Church of Scotland in Islington, London.
