Benedictine abbey near Worms. Founded in 762/3, it was placed in the care of Chrodegang of Metz from Gorze, and in the 10th cent. it was a centre of the Gorze reform movement. In the Carolingian age it had a major scriptorium and library, which was important for the transmission of classical and patristic texts.
