The haze or smog that afflicts Los Angeles and causes upper respiratory irritation (red, watery eyes, dry cough, etc.). This is a photochemical phenomenon, caused by the effect of solar ultraviolet radiation on oxides of nitrogen in automobile exhaust fumes, producing a combination of toxic and irritant oxides of nitrogen and other compounds and aggravated by high concentration of ground level ozone.
