Quick Reference

A method for determining the organic matter content of a soil. A dried sample of soil is subjected to high temperature in a muffle furnace in order to oxidize all of the organic matter. The loss in weight after cooling then gives the organic matter content. Since calcium carbonate also decays at high temperature to release carbon dioxide, any lime present in the soil must be removed first.
