US astronaut. He was pilot of the two-month Skylab 3 (see skylab) mission in July 1973, and spent 11 hours on two space walks. In March 1982, he commanded the Columbia space shuttle mission, the first to use the Canadarm. His time in space totalled 1 619 hours. Lousma was selected as an astronaut in 1966 and left NASA in 1983.
