A birth weight at or below 2,500 grams. Very low birth weight is defined as birth weight below 1,500 grams, and ultralow birth weight is below 1,000 grams. Birth defects are increasingly common at low birth weights, and many low birth weight infants require prolonged intensive care, which of course is increasingly costly.
