When Richard I left the Third Crusade and was imprisoned in Germany, Philip Augustus of France launched an attack on Normandy. Once Richard was released he began a successful counter‐attack. At Louviers, in January 1196, Richard recovered most of the territory that had been lost. But after John's accession, the whole of the duchy of Normandy was lost in 1204.
