Quick Reference

A paralytic tick-borne neurological virus disease primarily of sheep that can infect humans, such as farmers. “Louping,” an obsolete version of “leaping,” refers to convulsive twitching and jumping of affected sheep. The disease can have considerable economic impact when it occurs in epidemic form and is therefore an important veterinary public health problem. It is controlled by eliminating ticks.
