Region of the body containing three functional segments: the thigh, the lower leg (knee, tibia, and fibula), and the foot. The lower limb carries the entire weight of the erect body and is subjected to exceptionally high forces during jumping and running. It contains thicker and stronger bones than the upper limb, and is specialized for stability and weight-bearing.
